A Message from Our Board Chair on Leadership Transitions

It is my great pleasure as AchieveMission's Board Chair to share several developments that will significantly enhance the organization’s ability to strengthen nonprofit leadership and Human Capital Management capacity. 

Our strategic goal for the past seven years has been to develop a nonprofit Human Capital Management consulting practice with predictable, exemplary results, demonstrate the impact of our approach through evaluation data and case studies, and build a leadership team able to sustain the consulting practice as we expand our scope. During this time, AchieveMission has built a vibrant community of practice with more than 100 exemplary clients and funders. In recognition of this achievement, we are pleased to share that: 

  • Effective March 1, we have awarded James W. Shepard a four-month sabbatical that will allow him the opportunity to rest and reflect before we dive into strategic planning this summer. Over the course of his leadership of AchieveMission, James has led the expansion of its service offerings, integrated Talent Initiative, and recruited an outstanding team with both deep Human Capital Management expertise and extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. 
  • Concurrently, we are promoting Jan Rose and Mike Markovits, Partners, to Co-Executive Directors of the consulting practice. Over the past few years Jan and Mike have successfully played increasingly larger roles in strengthening and leading the practice, and we want to congratulate and acknowledge them for their contributions. We are fortunate to have such strong leaders who have been instrumental in building the practice ready to step up and lead. I look forward to supporting Jan and Mike as they lead the way in addressing the multitude of talent challenges facing the sector.
  • Upon his return from sabbatical, James will take up the next milestone in our strategic plan, creating ways to leverage AchieveMission's experience, expertise, and intellectual property to scale our impact. We welcome your ideas and suggestions for new services and methods that will allow AchieveMission to serve thousands rather than dozens of nonprofits per year.

James said, “I am overjoyed we have achieved an important milestone that has been a key strategic goal for the past seven years and that the Board has generously granted me a sabbatical and approved the promotion of Mike and Jan. I am also excited for our increasingly capable Board playing a larger role in the run up to my sabbatical. All of these changes allow us to leverage our strengths and enable AchieveMission to even better address the nonprofit Human Capital Management challenges so prevalent today.”
