What are Your Critical Decisions?

By: Marcia W. Blenko, Michael C. Mankins, and Paul Rogers I Publisher: Bain and Company I Published: 2010 I Resource Added: 2013

This article for organization and department leaders describes how to determine the organization’s (or department’s) most critical decisions in two categories: big, game-changing decisions and everyday, recurring decisions.  It shows the reader how to first create a decision architecture, which lays out a list of decisions for every major business process of an organization or a given department and second, how to winnow the list down based on the value and degree of management attention required. The article also argues that before changing the decision-making process, it is useful to conduct a decision x-ray, in which the organization assesses the effectiveness of particular decisions and diagnoses what’s holding it back.
