We define racial equity (RE) as both an outcome and a process. As an outcome, we achieve racial equity when race no longer determines one’s socioeconomic outcomes; when everyone has what they need to thrive. As a process, we apply racial equity when those most impacted by structural racial inequity are meaningfully involved in the creation and implementation of the institutional policies and practices that impact their lives.

We have helped many organizations identify and address their most pressing leadership and equity-related challenges, leading to concrete changes in management practice, systems, and culture.  This work begins with a comprehensive internal DEI assessment followed by an internal organizational planning initiative to surface adaptive challenges and technical needs and create concrete action plans to address the short-term and long-term issues.

Our proposed approach helps organizations build an equity infrastructure – more than one role who is charged with shepherding this work.  Working groups are set up to lead and own the work in partnership with senior decision makers. This reflects our belief – grounded in experience – that the authorization of and provision of resources for an internal DEI/RE working group is a critical change lever for advancing the deep work within an organization. Given that racial bias lives in formal structure and also in behaviors, assumptions, values and norms, it is not possible for meaningful work to be carried out in a top-down fashion by senior leaders alone. Instead, it requires a mixed group of the people experiencing the issues firsthand – across all departments and authority levels – to learn together and engage in courageous conversation that incorporates their own lived experiences in values. Once group members are able to hear each other, paying particular attention to the voices of non-dominant identity groups, they can begin to arrive at a common problem definition of the top equity-related challenges to address.
